Over time the function of the joystick has changed dramatically. From being used on the first planes to being used for computer games, the joystick has certainly changed the lives of many people.
History
The joystick was first invented for use on aeroplanes to control the movement of planes in the sky. It worked because certain parts of it were connected to metal strings which then attached the according plane area.
Later on joysticks were made electronic, and from this came the first remote controlled aircraft. Joysticks were then made to convert electronic signals to radio signals, and the new invention became commonplace in planes around World War 2, as well as in missiles.
Possibly the first use of joysticks outside of aircraft was the use of them on powered wheelchairs, and as the technology became smaller, were then used for electronic games, and then finally video games.

How does it work
Modern gaming joysticks work by converting physical movement to lines of computer code. Joysticks are like specialized electrical switches, where when you move the joystick, it comes in contact with different switches, which then tell the computer what to do. Springs make sure the joystick is easy to maneuver, and prevent it being stuck on any switches.
